Chameleon Startup Manager
for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP/2003/XP x64 Edition/2003 x64 Edition/Vista

Want your computer to startup and operate faster?

Chameleon Startup Manager is a Windows startup manager that accelerates Windows startup and ensures smoother running of the operating system. It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

Chameleon Startup Manager automatically monitors and reports back if new programs have been added to the startup list, while a manager provides advanced details on running applications.

How to Do Computer Maintenance and Reduce Computer Problems

It is not rocket science and you don’t have to be an IT professional to keep your PC in good shape. Any computer user can follow the guidelines I have mentioned below, and can reduce their PC problems dramatically.

Steps

  1. Use a good anti-virus program. This is the most important piece of work in preventive maintenance. Installing the anti-virus program is not good enough. You should do following as well:
    1. Set-up the program to download and install updates automatically.
    2. Check the virus definitions date regularly and see whether it is up to date.
    3. Schedule periodic full system scans.
  2. Set-up your PC to Download and install "Windows Updates" automatically. Windows updates include Operating System patches for bugs and PC security related issues. These patches can reduce many unknown computer problems.
  3. Use the Chameleon Startup Manager tool to check which programs are starting at the boot time. Some common tools have a nasty habit to "call home" and check for updates. You can uncheck those programs. If a program is not immediately required upon Windows start, you can specify a delayed startup (we recommend several minutes) or upon what program this program should be started.
  4. Do not download and install unknown software from Internet. This is the biggest mistake most of the PC users are doing. Some of this software can damage the Windows registry, which cause lot of errors.
  5. Uninstall unnecessary programs installed in your PC.
  6. Be very careful when you download music from the Internet. Always stick to one trustworthy web site.
  7. Perform Scandisk periodically to check the Hard Drive.
  8. Install anti Spyware program to detect Spyware tools.
  9. Install a Personal Firewall. Most of the anti virus programs are bundled with Personal Firewalls these days. Personal firewall is a barrier between your PC and the outside world. This can protect your PC from hackers and Spyware tools.
  10. Delete temporary Internet files. To automatically delete these files in IE, goto Tools - Internet Options - Advanced. Scroll to bottom and select "Empty Temporary Internet when browser is closed".
  11. If possible, try not to use Internet Explorer because it has major security breaches which could be potentially harmful for your system. Two alternative web browsers you can try are Mozilla Firefox and Opera.
  12. Visit Java to get the latest Java download.
  13. Download the SiteAdvisor plug-in, it protects you from most web based security threats and annoyances. The site advisor gives you a safety rating for the sites you are on, and give a rating on your Google searches as well, from green (safe) to red (dangerous). This will help to prevent you visiting sites that are likely to damage your computer. It can be found on SiteAdvisor.
